RE: What Surname are you researching
Hi Moderator

I am interested in finding out more about the Bowden surname its origins and spread in Scotland. I have found out through DNA checking that my line has come from Northern Ireland in c1862 and settled in the West Lothian/ Lanarkshire area. If anybody can help I would interested to hear more.

RE: What Surname are you researching
Hi Everyone,
I'll throw this up and see where the winds take it.

I have a small dilemma.
Although his year of birth varies a bit I can't find anything earlier or any ancestors.
My Great great Grandfather immigrated to Australia in 1865 at the age of 28 (b 1837).
According to the Marriage Index he was born in Fifeshire.
The Deaths Index adds a little more:
James Street, son of James Street / Elizth. Houston, died: 1903, Footscray, Victoria, Australia., age: 63 yrs. (b 1840)
Being way out here on the Colonies, I have minimal access to Early records. However, I find that the 1881 Census has no record of anyone named "Street" in Scotland. (Maybe I'm searching wrong?)
Any assistance or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

RE: What Surname are you researching
Hi Bairdy, There were Streets in Dunfermline, Fife from what I can see up to the 1871 Census who came from England and there are James Streets born in England to a James & Elizabeth around the dates you mentioned. The Streets in Dunfermline have parents names of James & Ann and Richard & Euphemia. Don't know if this helps you or not - - Janette

RE: What Surname are you researching
It must be the same family appearing in the 1841 census http://www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
James Street's wife Ann was born in Fife but he and the rest of the family were born in England. Have a look at FREECEN the free to use 1841 census, try different combinations of information in their search. There is a Charles Street organisation and their website gives a little bit of their history http://www.csbgroup.co.uk/index.php?page=history
Maybe somewhere there is something to get you over your next hurdle.
